Well, in 1917, the conditions in Denmark were so tough they did just that.
According the book Abundant Health, they lived directly on pigs’ food–their barley and potatoes. They took all the wheat bran from the cows and put it in their whole rye bread.
The whole country was placed on a low protein diet, and the death rate went down during this period of rationing, October 1st, 1917, to October 1st, 1918, to 10.4 per one thousand, the lowest known death rate of any European country at the time.
