Hot Foot Bath Instructions

Are you wondering how to do a hot foot bath? Have you ever wanted to use this natural headache remedy to help relieve a headache?

This was covered in our natural remedies class at Ouachita Hills last week.

In our class we went deeper into the principles of hydrotherapy. It is a powerful tool that works with the body to help the body regain good health.

Before we do any treatment, we first want to analyze the cause of disease. Our Natural Remedies Encyclopedia has a excellent statement on the steps of how to recover our health: “Disease is an effort of nature to free the system from conditions that result from a violation of the laws of health. In case of sickness, the cause should be ascertained. Unhealthful conditions should be changed, wrong habits corrected. Then nature is to be assisted in her effort to expel impurities and to reestablish right conditions in the system.” Natural Remedies Encyclopedia, 874.

These are the steps we learn from that quote:

1. Determine the cause of our sickness

This is done by finding out what laws of health we are violating.

The laws of health are: nutrition, exercise, water, sunshine, temperance, air, rest, trust in God.

Practically speaking, we should ask ourselves: how is our nutrition, how is our exercise, how is our water intake/quality, etc.

2. Change our lifestyle in accordance to the laws of health

For example, we can choose to not eat this food, which is known to be a trigger for migraines.

3. Use natural remedies to help ward off our sickness

This is when we use hydrotherapy.

Even with hydrotherapy we don’t want to “symptom treat” without getting to the root of the cause of why we get sick and making lifestyle changes. That would totally defeat our goal of having optimal health.

Why is hydrotherapy an efficient tool for combating sicknesses?

Our blood flow is stagnant when we’re sick. Through the application of hot and cold water, our blood circulation is increased. When our circulation is increased, fresh blood goes to the affected area. That blood brings nutrition, oxygen, and takes away the waste products from our cells. Cells are the building blocks of our bodies. If we have healthy cells, we have healthy bodies. Therefore, we want to bring fresh blood to the area, so our cells can be healthy.

How does hydrotherapy help a headache?

Another principle of water treatments is its ability to move blood to different areas. To put it very simply, the application of hot water opens up the blood vessels, while cold constricts them. When we have a headache, our head is congested. We want to move some of that blood to another part of our body to relieve the congestion in our head. If you put a cloth wrung out in ice water on the head, it constricts the blood vessels in the head, which helps ease the congestion. The hot foot bath opens the blood vessels in the feet.

Let’s see the dry run demonstration from class to get a better concept of these ideas practically.

A person’s feet is placed in hot water during this treatment.

This is a very important step. You do not want the water to be too hot or cold for the treatment. Ideally, the water should be 104 F or above to get the best results. However, this treatment is not for everyone, and people such as diabetics, who don’t have feeling in their feet, or children, who will not tell you if they are getting burned, should not get this treatment. Again, the water shouldn’t be too hot, so it won’t burn the guest.

If you don’t have a thermometer, you can use your elbow to feel the temperature of the water. It’s more sensitive to heat than our hands. The basic principle is if anyone is going to be burned, it should the one giving the treatment. That’s why we feel the temperature of the water before putting someone’s feet in it.

We wrapped our guest in a sheet and a blanket so her extremities would be covered and her blood flow to would be more efficient.

You can lower your their feet down with your hands underneath their feet. This way, if the water is too hot, you will realize it first. Also, you should be in constant communication to make sure that the water is not too hot. Communication with your patient is a very vital part of hydrotherapy. If it is too hot, you can add some cold water to the bucket.

After that, you can apply a cold cloth wrung out in ice water, and put that on their head to keep the head cool and move the congestion away from the head. Throughout the treatment, refresh the cool cloth as needed.

This treatment can last anywhere from 15-30 minutes. During this time, even the hot water can cool. When that occurs, the feet should be taken out of the water, more hot water should be put in and mixed, and then the feet should be lowered slowly back into the water.

At the end of the treatment, much of the blood is now in the feet. We then want to equalize the circulation. To do this, we end our treatment, we pour a pitcher full of cold water over the feet (about 6 cups).

To finish the treatment, make sure you dry your patients’ feet well so they won’t be chilled. Otherwise, it will effectively reverse the benefits that you wanted to gain from the treatment.
